Why do some crafts only happen once… while others keep finding their way back to our table? Does this happen in your home as well?

In our house, some of the activities we do come and go as if they never happened, but a few of them quietly become part of our everyday flow. And it’s not because they’re fancier or anything like that, it’s just that thing where my kids genuinely enjoy or love one thing over the other. Does this make me happy? Oh, yes, because then I know I don’t need to do too much convincing, plus it just works for us.

This list is about the crafts we return to again and again, because they somehow fit naturally into our days and feel good to do together.

1. Toilet Paper Roll Creations

Anywhere you see a toilet paper roll, just look closely, and you’ll see us there. LOL, kidding. But seriously, though, this is one craft we never really stop doing. We go from crafting animals to creating mushrooms, people or completely made-up characters, because once a toilet paper roll hits the table, it always turns into something.

Why my kids love it:
They’re free to decide what it becomes. Also, it often starts as a craft and sometimes turns into play.

2. Paper Plate Everything

Another one is paper plates. They have a way of quietly solving a lot of craft decisions in our home. Not only are they sturdy and big enough for our ideas to thrive, but they sometimes become bags or lanterns, or just something really cute and completely unexpected.

Why my kids love it:
There’s a lot of space to work with. They can paint, draw, cut, and glue all on one surface because a paper plate feels like a blank canvas they’re not afraid of.

3. Collages

With this one, sometimes it’s stickers, other times it’s scraps of paper, bits of cardboard, or magazine cut-outs.

Why my kids love it:
They’re completely in control. Choosing, sticking, and rearranging feels satisfying in a quiet, focused way. Also, it’s one of those crafts that naturally slows everyone down and one where I can sit beside them and just be without managing anything.

4. Nature + Craft Combos

One thing my kids are obsessed with is picking up stuff on the ground when we’re outside and bringing it home: leaves, sticks, stones, flowers, sometimes even bugs. And, any time we bring something in from outside, we try to use it for something useful (except the bugs, of course), and change the feel of our activity for that day.

Why my kids love it:
Opportunity for them to bring home their nature treasures. Plus, there’s a sense of ownership when something they found becomes part of the craft, and It feels personal and connected to their day.

5. Loose Parts Crafting

This is the kind of crafting that doesn’t start with an idea; it just begins with random materials such as buttons, pom-poms, beads, scraps, lids, etc. Basically, just everything lying around the house, and all I do is lay everything out for my kids to just carry on. I’ve learned over time that when kids are given open-ended materials, creativity tends to take its own lead.

Why my kids love it:
My girls get to decide what’s necessary and what’s not – sorting, grouping, making faces and so on. Apart from that, it’s creative without pressure and it’s just another way to keep them doing something they genuinely love.

Conclusion

When I look back at the crafts we repeat, I’m reminded about how it’s never about the finished result but more about how naturally they fit into our days and how easily my girls settle in.

This is what crafting looks like in our home, the kinds that don’t ask for too much, they just meet us where we are and leave room for us to enjoy the process. And if you’re ever wondering where to start, you can always come back to one of these. We do.
