Valentine's day craft & activities for kids

It’s another season of hearts and roses, and what cuter way is there to bring in the season of love than to create memorable keepsakes with our kids? That said, let’s be real for a second. I know that finding the time to sit at the craft table or even getting your child interested long enough to actually finish it can feel like a challenge, and you’re not alone in this bubble. But, I promise you, these ideas will naturally invite you and your kids to the craft table.

I have created this list of Valentine crafts that I’m one hundred per cent sure you’d be able to make time for, and your kids would definitely sit for them. Why? Because mine sat for them. Apart from that, all of these crafts fall under the simple and low-pressure umbrella, which all of us moms love. In addition to that, you don’t need to scramble for supplies to do them because you probably already have them sitting somewhere in your kitchen drawers.

So, here we go:

1. Heart Collage

Draw three hearts on white paper in an infinity shape. Next, give your child a tray of random items, including paper squares, pompoms, crayons, flowers, and dot stickers, all in shades of red and pink, and allow them to arrange and stick these items within the lines to create an adorable textured heart collage.

I shared more ideas like this in my post 10 rainbow crafts kids would sit for.

2. Fingerprint Heart Art

Fold and cut construction paper into a heart shape, then glue it onto white paper. It should look like a 3D heart-shaped flower pot. Next, draw stems starting from inside the flower heart to the top of the paper, then add branches to the stems. Give your child washable paint and let them add fingerprint hearts to the branches.

This style of painting strengthens fine motor skills in kids.

3. Paper Plate Wreath

Fold two sheets of construction paper into four, draw a heart on it, then cut it out. Next. Cut out the centre of a paper plate. Next, apply some glue around the rim of the paper plate and begin to stick the paper hearts around it. For extra decor, add some cute stickers to it.

For my not-so-crafty moms who love easy-to-do wreaths, this is for you.

4. Hearts On A Straw

This one’s so easy, even your two-year-old can do it. Cut out two heart shapes from pink and red paper, then draw simple faces or emotions on each heart.

Next, place one heart face-down, add a little glue, lay the straw on top, then cover it with the second heart, face up.

Now you’ve got two hearts with different faces and emotions, perfect for talking about feelings. You can tie on a few ribbons for extra cuteness if you’d like, as we did in the photos.

5. Heart Reveal

Place a paper heart shape in the centre of a sheet of paper and secure it lightly so it doesn’t move. Then, invite your child to dip a sponge into paint and gently dab all around the heart, covering the paper with colour.

Once the painting is done, carefully lift the paper heart to reveal the heart shape underneath. This moment of reveal is especially mesmerising for kids and always brings huge toothless smiles.

6. Toilet Roll Stamp Art (Handprint tree)

For this activity, we used toilet roll heart stamps.
Start by gently bending one end of an empty toilet paper roll into a heart shape and pinching it to hold its form.

Next, let your child trace their handprint onto a sheet of paper, as this will become the tree trunk and branches. Once that’s done, pour a little paint onto a plate and let your child dip the heart-shaped toilet roll into the paint.

Stamp all around the handprint, creating heart shapes that turn into flowers blooming on the tree. Let it dry, add any extra details your child wants, and enjoy a sweet, simple piece of artwork made with something you already have at home.

This is one of those crafts that work really well on tired afternoons.

7. Valentine’s loose parts craft

My kids had so much fun with this one, mostly because Mama wasn’t there to direct 😅

Start by taping sheets of paper onto the table and doodling a few simple characters. I drew some hearts and a bear, then left a big blank space so they could use their imagination.

Pre-cut some paper (or just tear magazines with pretty colours into scraps), and set out stickers, pom-poms, buttons, crayons, paint, glue, whatever you already have at home.

Put everything on the table, step back, and let your kids decorate their way. They love being their own mastermind when they create.

8. 3D Paper Flower Garden

This one’s really simple and I’m not gonna lie, this craft was more for mama (me) than for my kids… but they happily tagged along anyway.

Grab a white sheet of paper and draw a few stems with leaves. Next, cut small heart shapes from coloured paper, then cut a slit from the bottom of each heart up to the centre, then glue the two sides of the slit slightly over each other. That little overlap is the easiest way to get a simple 3D effect.

Once your heart petals are ready, start glueing them around each stem to create a flower shape. That’s it. just a calm, creative mama moment at the table.

If you’re a not-so-crafty mom who still wants to create sweet moments with your kids, this is exactly where you belong.
