This easy egg carton flower garden is colourful, creative, and fun for kids. My preschoolers had the best time making this together, and it turned into their own little play garden afterwards.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • 1 empty egg carton
  • Paint and washable paint markers
  • White print paper
  • Scissors
  • Popsicle sticks

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Paint your egg carton green: This will be your “garden bed.” For low mess, use washable paint markers. Not only are they easy to hold, but they don’t create a mess.
  2. Draw and cut out flowers: Draw cute flowers (up to ten) on your print paper, colour them or paint them, then cut them out.
  3. Glue the flowers: Get your popsicle sticks and glue your flowers onto the sticks (this will be the stem). Don’t forget to add paper leaves with green construction paper to the stems.
  4. Punch holes. After that, punch holes in the top of the egg carton and insert each flower stem.

Mama Tip

If you can, pre-cut the flowers and leaves ahead of time; trust me, it makes the craft session way more fun (and you’ll avoid having a bored, restless toddler circling your legs while you try to cut things out!). Also, let your kids take over the colouring, glueing, and inserting the flowers themselves, because they love being part of the process, and it’s not just great for fine motor skills, but it also encourages confidence and independent play.

Five Things This Craft Doubles As

  • A counting activity: Each flower is a chance to count. How many did we plant? How many red ones? Can you give each one a number? Add, subtract, compare, all through playful hands-on math!
  • An introduction to planting and harvesting: Even though these flowers don’t need water, this craft opens the door to talking about how real plants grow. What do seeds need? What happens after we “plant” them?
  • Fine motor skills: Cutting, glueing, and inserting. Great for working tiny muscles.
  • A DIY toy for pretend play: Once it’s done, this turns into a little garden scene your child can come back to again and again. Great for imaginative play, like a flower shop.
  • A cute keepsake: It can make for a cute little decoration in your kitchen or windowsill.
